For over seventy years, Lions throughout the world have been dedicated to the preservation and restoration of sight.  The New Mexico Lions Eye Foundation is the effort of the more than 2000 Lions of the State of New Mexico to aid in that effort.

The purpose of the Foundation is to provide eye screenings for early detection of eye diseases including but not limited to glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration among the citizens of New Mexico.  Examination includes visual acuity with or without eyeglasses, visual fields, intraocular pressure, front of eye examination with slit lamp, examination of optic nerve and macula, in undiluted condition, dilated examination if necessary.  All screenings are conducted free of charge.  Referrals are made to local medical practitioners.

Screenings are conducted in a 34' motor home especially constructed for the New Mexico Eye Foundation, and equipped with the latest medical technology.  Medical services are provided by the New Mexico Ophthalmologic Society and the New Mexico Optometric Association.  Promotion and additional staffing is by local Lions Clubs.  Screening sites include shopping centers, churches, senior citizen centers, medical clinics/centers and wherever services are requested.  Since 1997, over 19225 people were screened in 40 communities throughout the state.  Over 40% of those screened showed some symptoms of eye disease.

The New Mexico Lions Eye foundation is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.  Funds are raised from Lions Clubs, individual Lions and trough the generosity of individuals, corporate contributions and foundation grants.  Major support has been received from Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF).
